alexithymia
noun
A personality construct characterized by the sub-clinical inability to identify and describe emotions in the self.
Example: I read a research about people with alexithymia.

animism
noun
The attribution of a soul to plants, inanimate objects, and natural phenomena.
Example: Animism in this sense would be thinking that the sun and moon go away and "sleep" at appropriate times, or the sun "hides" behind clouds.

anxiety
noun
An intense emotional response caused by the preconscious recognition that a repressed conflict is about to emerge into consciousness.
Example: To sum up, obesity appears to be not only a cause of disease, but sometimes a result of unhappiness, anxiety, and tension.

aphonia
noun
Loss of the voice resulting from a disease, injury to the vocal cords, or various psychological causes, such as hysteria.
Example: I read a book with a person who had aphonia.

bipolar disorder
noun
A mental illness that brings severe high and low moods and changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and behavior.
Example: I once saw a person with bipolar disorder in a store.

butterfly effect
noun
Notion that an effect or a trivial thing can have serious consequences if it causes an imbalance and causes other changes that create a big upheaval.
Example: I saw a movie about the butterfly effect.

cerebral dominance
noun
The normal tendency for one half of the brain, usually the left cerebral hemisphere in right-handed people, to exercise more control over certain functions than the other.
Example: The side of my brain that has a cerebral dominance is the left.

clinical psychologist
noun
A mental health professional with highly specialized training in the diagnosis and psychological treatment of mental illness.
Example: I saw a clinical psychologist last week.

cognition
noun
The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
Example: Both versions consider space and time to be human intuitions, but the stronger version goes on to make a: "negative ontological claim about objects outside our cognition."

dissociative disorder
noun
A personality disorder marked by a disturbance in the integration of identity, memory, or consciousness.
Example: Someone I follow on an application has a dissociative disorder.

egocentrism
noun
An inability ob the part of a child to see any point of view of other than his or her own.
Example: This little boy has egocentrism.

emotion
noun
An affective state of consciousness in which joy, sorrow, fear, hate is experienced.
Example: I felt the emotion of fear yesterday when my cat appeared suddenly in my face.

ethnocentrism
noun
Belief in the superiority of one's own ethnic group.
Example: My cousin has ethnocentrism because he hates all other races.

expressive language disorder
noun
A communication disorder in which there are difficulties with verbal and written expression.
Example: Some autistic people have expression language disorder.

noun
A therapy for phobias in which clients are exposed, with their permission, to the stimuli most frightening to them.
halo effect
noun
The tendency for an impression created in one area to influence opinion in another area.
Example: The 'halo effect' suggests that we form our total impression of a person from this one outstanding trait.

hypermnesia
noun
Exceptionally exact or vivid memory, especially as associated with certain mental illnesses.
Example: Evaluating hypnotic memory enhancement (hypermnesia and reminiscence) using multitrial forced recall.

A disease or period of sickness affecting the body or mind.
Example: My sister had an illness last month.

mental disability
noun
A mental anomaly that causes either suffering or an impaired ability to function in ordinary life, and which is not developmentally or socially normative.
Example: In a psychic hospital, there are people with mental disability.

mental distress
noun
A range of symptoms and experiences of a person's internal life that are commonly held to be troubling, confusing or out of the ordinary.
Example: This girl is having mental distress.

mental health
noun
Psychological well-being and satisfactory adjustment to society and to the ordinary demands of life.
Example: However, it is now more common to use a biomedical approach to mental health problems when treating someone such as the Wolf-Man, rather than a psychoanalytic model.

paranoia
noun
A mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or exaggerated self-importance, typically elaborated into an organized system.
Example: My best friend has paranoia when she is at her dad's home.

personality
noun
The sum total of all the behavioural and mental characteristics by means of which an individual is recognized as being unique.
Example: She explicitly stated that Nisa's story is not a fair representation of !Kung life, either in her experience or in her personality, and adds that her views were not shared by others (Shostak, 1990:350).

An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
Example: I have a phobia of spiders.

schizophrenia
noun
A long-term mental disorder involving faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, and withdrawal from reality and social relationships.
Example: It has been shown that unpopular children are more likely to have psychological difficulties such as schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, mood disorders and criminal behaviour (Kupersmidt, Coie and Dodge, 1990).

A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.
Example: I have stress when an exam is about to begin.

stuttering
noun
A speech disorder characterized by spasmodic repetition of the initial consonant or syllable of words and frequent pauses or prolongation of sounds.
Example: Research has found that infants born at 23-27 weeks exhibit fewer babblings and more frequent stuttering in their language (Luoma et al, 1998) with similar findings being identified in premature infants at 0;3- 0;6.

The treatment of disease or disorders, as by some remedial, rehabilitative, or curative process.
Example: However, the believability of Gillies claims is reduced by the biological explanations for "the physical, behavioural and physiological dependence of nicotine" (see Benowitz, 1996; Pangal. 2003) and effectiveness of "nicotine replacement therapy" in easing "these dependencies" (Benowitz, 1993).
